Senior software engineer · Manchester

I build software
people actually use.

Ten years across web, mobile and backend systems, from first sketch to something shipping in production. Currently at Street Group.

Selected work

Four products.
One instinct.

Find the repeated decision. Remove the noise around it. Build the smallest product that makes the right action feel natural.

Closer look · AstroTool

One question.
A real sky.

Most astronomy apps start with a catalog. AstroTool starts with the decision people actually make at the back door: is tonight worth going outside, and what should I look at?

  1. Problem

Too many apps for one evening

Weather, moon phase, star charts, ISS trackers and smart-scope manuals all answer a piece of the night. A beginner still has to stitch them together before they know whether to get the coat or stay in.

  2. Constraint

    No invented sky

If location is off, the product asks for it. It does not show another city's forecast or dummy stars. Recommendations have to be explainable, mobile-first and readable if you have never used a telescope.

  3. Decision

One score, then one next action

AstroScore folds cloud, moon, dark hours, humidity and wind into a single 0 to 100, with a plain-language reason. Kit comes first: eyes, binoculars, telescope or a Dwarf / Seestar. Then a timeline of what to look at, and a shareable tonight ticket.

  4. Result

A night plan in one screen

Live at astrotool.io. Free, no account. The Salford Astro site preview points visitors here before they travel to the observatory. The same question now drives Raspberry Pi work for capture and remote control.

How I think

Clarity before
complexity.

Good software starts with understanding what people are actually trying to do. I get close to the problem, test the risky parts early and keep the solution straightforward.

01
?

Frame the real problem

I start with the person, the constraint and the result they need, not a preselected technology.

02

Map the system

I make dependencies and trade-offs visible so everyone understands what a decision will change.

03

Test the difficult part

I prototype the uncertain parts first, while changing direction is still quick and inexpensive.

04

Leave it better

I ship maintainable foundations and leave the product easier for the next person to understand.

I highly recommend Dom King as a full stack engineer and UX enthusiast. Dom consistently demonstrates exceptional dedication and a strong work ethic in all his endeavors. His passion for both the technical and design aspects of his work is truly inspiring.

Dom's attention to detail and problem-solving skills make him a valuable asset to any team. He consistently goes above and beyond to deliver high-quality solutions and is always willing to put in the extra effort to ensure client satisfaction.

About

Engineer first.
Curious always.

Ten years shipping software in Manchester. An MRes in Interaction Design sits underneath it. Off the clock I build with Raspberry Pi and photograph the sky with Salford Astronomical Society, where I run the DwarfLab community.

Imaging and observatory control

Raspberry Pi setups for capture, remote control and weather-aware scheduling. The same product instinct, pointed at a night that can fall apart if the software is sloppy.

Sensors, boards and field prototypes

Pi and Arduino work from research through to real rooms: wearable navigation, supermarket systems, things that have to survive the place they are used in.
